Torah Bible Fragment
DOL homework help please?
I have to correct this sentence, and I pretty much have it, but I don't know where to put a fragment(which it says i have to have).
Here's the sentence:
The first five books of the hebrew bible or the torah. Contane the laws of judaism and the early history of the jewish people.
It says i have to have:
Capitalization, Fragment, Commas (Appositive), and Spelling.
I have everything but a fragment? How do i put a fragment in?
You normally do not want sentence fragments in writing. The fragments are already there. "The first five books of the Hebrew Bible or the Torah" period is a sentence fragment. It has a subject but no predicate (noun but no verb). Shorten it by getting rid of the adjectives and it's easier to see - "The books of the Bible or the Torah". What about them? What action do they do? The second phrase is also a fragment. The two fragments could be joined into a single sentence.
If I were writing this, the whole thing would read: "The first five books of the Hebrew Bible, or the Torah, contain the laws of Judaism and the early history of the Jewish people." Now, the two fragments are gone, there is a single sentence with a subject and verb, the misspellings and capitalizations are corrected, the appositive has been added by setting off "or the Torah" with commas (meaning that "the first five books of the Hebrew Bible" and "the Torah" are two names for the same thing. Another example of the use of the appositive is "Becky Thatcher, soon to be Mrs. Thomas Sawyer, walked down the aisle to the minister and her waiting groom." Only one person is walking down the aisle. The appositive here gives another name for Becky and a description of her "soon to be Mrs. T S".
